Irish Coffee

Il Coffee Irlandese, chiamato anche Caife Gaelach e il Caffè Gaelic in Irlanda, è un caffè dolcizzato con whisky irlandese e un cappuccio di panna leggermente tostata. Il caffè irlandese è servito come bevanda calda sul bar e cocktail. È ora dimostrato che questa bevanda calda è stata inventata in un ristorante all'aeroporto Foynes, un precursore dell'attuale aeroporto internazionale di Shannon, nell'ovest dell'Irlanda nei primi anni '40. Il capo del ristorante Joe Sheridan doveva essere offerto ai passeggeri che stavano aspettando il loro volo all'estero, quando l'aeroporto era rifornito. Internamente, il caffè irlandese è diventato noto solo quando il Café Buena Vista a San Francisco ha copiato questa specialità di caffè nel 1952 dopo che il giornalista e il vincitore del premio Pulitzer Stanton Delaplane avevano detto al proprietario Jack Koeppler. Koeppler ha volato in Irlanda per trovare il giusto mix di ingredienti. Per lungo tempo, la Buena Vista era erroneamente considerata l'origine del caffè irlandese.

Irish Coffee, in Irland selbst auch Caife Gaelach respektive Gaelic Coffee genannt, ist ein gesüßter Kaffee mit irischem Whiskey und einer Haube aus leicht angeschlagener Sahne. Auf Bar- und Cocktailkarten wird Irish Coffee als Hot Drink geführt. Es gilt mittlerweile als belegt, dass dieses Heißgetränk Anfang der 1940er Jahre in einem Restaurant des Flughafens Foynes – eines Vorläufers des heutigen Shannon International Airport – im Westen Irlands erfunden wurde. Restaurant-Chef Joe Sheridan soll es damals für Passagiere, die auf den Weiterflug ihrer Maschine nach Übersee warteten, angeboten haben, als der Flughafen zum Auftanken angeflogen wurde. International bekannt wurde Irish Coffee aber erst, als das Café Buena Vista in San Francisco diese Kaffeespezialität 1952 kopierte, nachdem der Journalist und Pulitzerpreisträger Stanton Delaplane dem Inhaber Jack Koeppler davon berichtet hatte. Koeppler flog selbst nach Irland, um die richtige Mischung der Zutaten herauszubekommen. Lange Zeit galt das Buena Vista deswegen fälschlicherweise als Ursprungsort des Irish Coffee.
