O abeto é um gênero de 48-55 espécies de coníferas de folhas perenes na família Pinaceae. Encontra-se em grande parte da América do Norte e Central, Europa, Ásia e África do Norte, ocorrendo nas montanhas ao longo da maior parte do alcance. Firs estão mais intimamente relacionados com o gênero Cedrus. Os abetos Douglas não são verdadeiros, sendo do gênero Pseudotsuga. Todas as espécies nativas atingem alturas de 10 a 80 m de altura e diâmetros do tronco de 0,5-4 m quando maduras. Os abetos podem ser distinguidos de outros membros da família do pinheiro pela união única de suas folhas tipo agulha e por seus diferentes cones.
