Tártaros
Os tártaros, historicamente tártaros, são um termo guarda-chuva para povos turcos no território do antigo Império Russo. Os tártaros eram a população de língua turca da Tartaria, as terras governadas pelas elites turco-mongol do século XIV até as conquistas do Império Russo nos séculos XVIII a XIX. Durante o período moderno inicial, foi feita uma distinção entre os territórios tártaros europeu e asiático, referindo-se à Tartaria Menor e à Grande Tartaria, respectivamente. O maior grupo de longe que foi chamado de "tártaros" pelos russos são os tártaros do Volga, nativos da região do Volga, que por essa razão também são simplesmente conhecidos como "tártaros" e seu idioma como idioma tártaro. Seu número é estimado em cerca de 6 milhões. Além dos tártaros do Volga, há grupos menores de muçulmanos turco-falantes também conhecidos como "tártaros", sendo o maior grupo desses tártaros da Criméia, com cerca de meio milhão, cuja língua tártara da Criméia não é agora inteligível com a Volga Tatar language.
