Virulência
Virulência é, segundo a definição de MeSH, o grau de patogenicidade dentro de um grupo ou espécie de parasitas conforme indicado por taxas de letalidade e / ou a capacidade do organismo de invadir os tecidos do hospedeiro. A patogenicidade de um organismo - sua capacidade de causar doença - é determinada pelos seus fatores de virulência. A virulência nominal deriva do adjetivo virulento. Virulento pode descrever a gravidade da doença ou a infecciosidade de um patógeno. A palavra virulenta deriva da palavra latina virulentus, que significa "uma ferida envenenada" ou "cheia de veneno". Em um contexto ecológico, a virulência pode ser definida como perda de aptidão induzida pelo parasita do hospedeiro. A virtude pode ser entendida em termos de causas próximas - os traços específicos do patógeno que ajudam a tornar o hospedeiro mal e as causas últimas - as pressões evolutivas que levam a traços virulentos que ocorrem em uma estirpe de patógenos.
