Abstinența este o reținere auto-impusă de a se deda la activitățile corporale care sunt experimentate pe scară largă ca oferind plăcere. Cel mai frecvent, termenul se referă la abstinența sexuală sau abstinența la alcool sau hrană. Practica poate rezulta din interdicții religioase și considerații practice. Abstinența se poate referi și la medicamente. De exemplu, vă puteți abține de la fumat. Abstinența are forme diverse. În mod obișnuit, se referă la o abstinență temporară sau parțială de la alimente, la fel ca în post. În programul de douăsprezece etape al Overeaters Abstinența anonimă este termenul pentru renunțarea la alimentația compulsivă, asemănătoare cu sensul de sobrietate pentru alcoolici. Deoarece regimul este destinat să fie un act conștient, ales în mod liber pentru a spori viața, abstinența este uneori distinsă de mecanismul psihologic al represiunii. Acesta din urmă este un stat inconștient, având consecințe nesănătoase. Freud a numit canalizarea energiilor sexuale în alte activități mai acceptabile din punct de vedere cultural sau social, "sublimare".
