Augustus
Augustus a fost fondatorul Imperiului Roman și al primului său Împărat, condus de la 27 î.en până la moartea sa în 14 d.Hr. Sa născut Gaius Octavius într-o ramură ecvestră veche și bogată a familiei plebei Octavii. După asasinarea marelui său unchi-mamă Iulius Cezar în anul 44 î.Hr., voința lui Cezar este numită Octavian ca fiu adoptat și moștenitor. Împreună cu Mark Antony și Marcus Lepidus, a format al Doilea Triumvirat pentru a învinge asasinii lui Caesar. După victoria lor la Philipi, triumviratul a împărțit între ei Republica romană și a condus ca dictatori militari. Triumviratul a fost în cele din urmă sfâșiat sub ambitiile concurente ale membrilor săi: Lepidus a fost condus în exil și eliberat de poziția sa, iar Antony sa sinucis în urma înfrângerii sale la biserica Actium de către Augustus în 31 î.Hr. După moartea celui de-al doilea triumvirate, Augustus a restabilit fațada exterioară a Republicii libere, cu putere guvernamentală învestită în Senatul Roman, magistrații executivi și adunările legislative. În realitate, însă, și-a păstrat puterea autocratică asupra Republicii ca dictator militar.
