În hinduism, un avatar / ævətɑr / este o descendență deliberată a unei divinități pe Pământ sau o coborâre a Ființei Supreme și este în mare parte tradusă în limba engleză ca "încarnare", dar mai precis ca "apariție" sau "manifestare". Fenomenul unui avatar este observat în hinduism, ayyavazhi și sikhism. Avatarul este considerat unul dintre principiile de bază ale hinduismului. Termenul este cel mai des asociat cu Vishnu, deși a ajuns, de asemenea, să fie asociat cu alte zeități. Diferitele liste de avatare ale lui Vishnu apar în scripturile hinduse, incluzând zece Dashavatara a Garuda Purana și cele douăzeci și doi de avatare din Bhagavata Purana, deși acesta din urmă adaugă că incarnările lui Vishnu sunt nenumărate.
