Păsările extinse aparțin subclaselor Neornithes, care trăiesc în întreaga lume și se întind de la mărimea de 5 cm albastru de albine până la 2,75 metri de strut. Recordul fosil indică faptul că păsările au apărut în dinozaurile theropod în perioada jurasică, acum 150 de milioane de ani. Păsările extinse au aripi; cele mai recente specii fără aripi au fost moa, care în general se consideră a fi dispărut în secolul al XVI-lea. Aripile sunt evoluate în fața forelimb, iar cele mai multe specii de păsări pot zbura. Păsările fără zbor includ ratite, pinguini și diverse specii insulare endemice. Unele specii de păsări, în special pinguini și membri ai familiei Anatidae, sunt adaptate să înoate.
