Desorbția este un fenomen prin care o substanță este eliberată de pe o suprafață sau printr-o suprafață. Procesul este opusul sorbției. Aceasta se întâmplă într-un sistem care se află în starea de echilibru de sorbție între faza în vrac și o suprafață adsorbantă. Atunci când concentrația de substanță în faza globală este redusă, o parte din substanța sorbată se modifică la starea vrac. În chimie, în special în cromatografie, desorbția este capacitatea unei substanțe chimice de a se deplasa cu faza mobilă. Cu cât se desornează mai mult o substanță chimică, cu atât este mai puțin probabil ca aceasta să se adsorbă, astfel încât, în loc să se prindă la faza staționară, substanța chimică se deplasează cu fața solvenților. În procesele de separare chimică, striparea este deasemenea menționată drept desorbție, deoarece o componentă a fluxului de lichid se deplasează prin transferul de masă într-o fază de vapori prin interfața de vapori lichid. După adsorbție, substanța adsorbită va rămâne pe substrat aproape nelimitat, cu condiția ca temperatura să rămână scăzută. Cu toate acestea, pe măsură ce crește temperatura, la fel se întâmplă și probabilitatea de desorbție.
