Dizabilitatea este consecința unei tulburări care poate fi fizică, cognitivă, mentală, senzorială, emoțională, de dezvoltare sau o combinație a acestora. O invaliditate poate să apară de la naștere sau să apară în timpul vieții unei persoane. Dizabilitățile reprezintă un termen umbrelă, care acoperă deficiențe, restricții de activitate și restricții de participare. O afectare este o problemă în funcția sau structura corpului; o limitare a activității este o dificultate întâlnită de un individ în executarea unei sarcini sau a unei acțiuni; în timp ce o restricție de participare este o problemă întâmpinată de un individ în implicarea în situații de viață. Astfel, handicapul este un fenomen complex, care reflectă o interacțiune între trăsăturile corpului persoanei și caracteristicile societății în care trăiește. O persoană se poate califica, de asemenea, ca fiind invalidă dacă a suferit o depreciere în trecut sau este considerată a fi dezactivată pe baza unui standard sau a unei norme personale sau de grup. Astfel de afectări pot include dizabilități fizice, senzoriale și cognitive sau de dezvoltare. Tulburările psihice și diferitele tipuri de afecțiuni cronice se pot califica de asemenea ca dizabilități.
