Bradul este un gen de 48-55 specii de copaci conifere din familia Pinaceae. Se găsește în mare parte din America de Nord și Centrală, Europa, Asia și Africa de Nord, care se întâlnesc în munți în cea mai mare parte a intervalului. Bilele sunt cele mai strâns legate de genul Cedrus. Douglas firs nu sunt brazi adevarate, fiind de genul Pseudotsuga. Toate speciile autohtone ating înălțimi de 10-80 m înălțime și trunchi diametre de 0,5-4 m atunci când mature. Bilele pot fi deosebite de ceilalți membri ai familiei de pin prin atașarea unică a frunzelor lor ca și a conurilor lor.
