Gayul este un termen care se referă în primul rând la o persoană homosexuală sau la trăsătura de a fi homosexual. Termenul a fost inițial folosit pentru a se referi la sentimentele de a fi "lipsit de griji", "fericit" sau "strălucitor și arătos". Termenul de utilizare ca referință la homosexualitate poate să apară încă din secolul al XIX-lea, dar utilizarea sa a crescut treptat în secolul XX. În limba engleză modernă, homosexualitatea a ajuns să fie folosită ca adjectiv, și ca un substantiv, referindu-se la oameni, în special la bărbații homosexuali, precum și la practicile și culturile asociate homosexualității.
