Gentry sunt "oameni bine-născuți, buni și bine crescuți" de înaltă clasă socială, mai ales în trecut. Gentry, în cea mai largă conotație, se referă la oameni cu o bună poziție socială legată de proprietăți imobiliare, niveluri superioare ale clerului și familii "blânde" de coborâre lungă care nu au obținut niciodată dreptul oficial de a purta o stemă. În Anglia, termenul se referă adesea la clasa socială a aristocrației debarcate sau la aristocrația minoră a cărei venituri derivă din proprietățile lor mari. Ideea de gentrie în sensul continental al "noblesse" este dispărută în limbajul comun în Anglia, în ciuda eforturilor entuziasmului de ao reînvia.
