Ierarhie
O ierarhie este un aranjament de elemente în care elementele sunt reprezentate ca fiind "deasupra", "mai jos", sau "la același nivel ca" unul pe altul. În mod abstract, o ierarhie poate fi modelată matematic ca un copac înrădăcinat: rădăcina copacului formează nivelul superior, iar copiii unui anumit vârf sunt la același nivel, sub părintele lor obișnuit. Cu toate acestea, un copac înrădăcinat nu permite ca elementele să fie "la același nivel ca" unul cu altul, deoarece un copac interzice ciclurile. Pentru a se adapta la aceasta, o ierarhie poate fi modelată folosind un grafic sau o relație de pre-comandă pe setul de elemente. În mod alternativ, elementele de tip similar pot fi grupate împreună, iar ierarhia poate fi modelată utilizând o relație de comandă parțială pe setul de seturi de elemente asemănătoare. O ierarhie poate lega entitățile direct sau indirect și fie vertical, fie orizontal.
