O melodrama este o lucrare dramatică care exagerează complotul și personajele pentru a atrage emoțiile, adesea cu personaje puternic stereotipice. Limbajul, comportamentul sau evenimentele care seamănă cu melodramele sunt, de asemenea, numite melodramatice. În contextele muzicale academice și istorice, melodramele sunt drame din secolele al XVIII-lea și al XIX-lea în care muzica orchestrală sau cântecul au fost folosite pentru a însoți acțiunea.
