O metropolă este un oraș sau o zonă urbană importantă, care reprezintă un important centru economic, politic și cultural pentru o țară sau regiune și un centru important pentru conexiuni regionale sau internaționale, comerț și comunicații. Termenul este grec și înseamnă "orașul-mamă" al unei colonii, adică orașul care a trimis colonii. Acest lucru a fost generalizat mai târziu într-un oraș considerat ca centru al unei activități specificate sau în orice oraș mare și important dintr-o națiune. Zonele urbane cu mai puțin de un milion de persoane sunt rareori considerate metropole în contexte contemporane. Orașele mari care aparțin unei aglomerări urbane mai mari, dar care nu sunt nucleul acelei aglomerații, nu sunt în general considerate o metropolă, ci o parte a acesteia.
