În general, un aviz este o hotărâre, punct de vedere sau afirmație cu privire la aspectele considerate în mod obișnuit subiective, adică bazate pe ceea ce este mai puțin decât absolut sigur și este rezultatul emoției sau al interpretării faptelor. Ceea ce distinge fapta de opinie este faptul că faptele sunt verificabile, adică pot fi dovedite în mod obiectiv că au avut loc. Un exemplu este: "America a fost implicată în războiul din Vietnam" față de "America avea dreptul să se implice în războiul din Vietnam". Un aviz poate fi susținut de fapte, caz în care devine un argument, deși oamenii pot trage opiniile opuse din aceleași fapte. Opiniile rareori se schimbă fără a se prezenta noi argumente. Se poate considera că o opinie este mai bine susținută de fapte decât alta prin analizarea argumentelor de susținere. În cazul utilizării ocazionale, termenul de opinie poate fi rezultatul perspectivei, înțelegerii, sentimentelor, credințelor și dorințelor unei persoane. Se poate referi la informații nefondate, spre deosebire de cunoștințe și de fapt. Opiniile colective sau profesionale sunt definite ca îndeplinind un standard mai înalt pentru fundamentarea opiniei.

Prima definiție a opiniei în dicționar este judecata sau convingerea care nu este fondată pe certitudine sau dovadă. O altă definiție a opiniei este sentimentul sau viziunea dominantă sau populară. Opinia este și evaluarea, impresia sau estimarea valorii sau valorii unei persoane sau a unui lucru.
