Pedeapsa este impunerea autorității unor lucruri nedorite sau neplăcute asupra unui individ sau a unui grup prin aplicarea legii, ca răspuns la un comportament pe care o autoritate îl consideră inacceptabil sau o încălcare a unei norme. Impunerea neplăcută poate include o amendă, o pedeapsă sau o confiscare, sau poate fi îndepărtarea sau negarea unui lucru plăcut sau de dorit. Individul poate fi o persoană sau chiar un animal. Autoritatea poate fi fie un grup, fie o singură persoană, iar pedeapsa poate fi efectuată oficial în cadrul unui sistem de lege sau informal în alte tipuri de setări sociale, cum ar fi în cadrul unei familii.
