Revenant
Un răzbunător este o fantomă vizibilă sau un cadavru animat despre care se credea că se întoarce din mormânt pentru a teroriza pe cei vii. Cuvântul "răzbunător" este derivat din cuvântul latin, reveniens, "returning". În Europa de Vest au apărut povestiri vii despre răzbunători în Evul Mediu Înalt. Deși legenda și folclorul mai târziu descriu că răzbunătorii se întorc pentru un anumit scop, în majoritatea conturilor medievale se întorc să-și hărțuiască familiile și vecinii supraviețuitori. Revenenții împărtășesc o serie de caracteristici cu vampirii folclorici. Multe povestiri au fost documentate de istoricii englezi în Evul Mediu. William of Newburgh a scris în anii 1190: "Nu ar fi ușor să credem că cadavrele morților ar trebui să se ridice din mormintele lor și ar trebui să se rătăcească spre teroarea sau distrugerea celor vii și să se întoarcă din nou la mormânt, din proprie inițiativă deschisă în mod spontan să le primească, nu au prezentat frecvente exemple, care au avut loc în vremurile noastre, sunt suficiente pentru a stabili acest fapt, pentru adevărul despre care există o mărturie abundentă ". Poveștile despre răzbunători au fost foarte personale, întotdeauna despre un anumit individ care a murit recent și avea o serie de trăsături comune.
