Maximilien François Marie Isidore Robespierre a fost avocat și politician francez și a fost una dintre cele mai cunoscute și mai influente figuri ale Revoluției Franceze. În calitate de membru al Adunării Constituante și al Clubului Jacobin, el a pledat împotriva pedepsei cu moartea și a abolirii sclaviei, sprijinind în același timp egalitatea de drepturi, votul universal și stabilirea unei republici. Influențat de filozofia iluminismului din secolul al XVIII-lea cum ar fi Rousseau și Montesquieu, a fost un articulator capabil al credințelor burgheziei de stânga. Aderența sa constantă și apărarea ideilor pe care le-a exprimat i-au adus porecla "Incorruptibil". Reputația lui a trecut prin cicluri.
