Spanac
Spanacul este o plantă de înflorire comestibilă în familia Amaranthaceae. Este nativ din Asia Centrală și de Sud-Vest. Este o plantă anuală, care crește până la o înălțime de până la 30 cm. Spanacul poate supraviețui peste iarnă în regiunile temperate. Frunzele sunt alternate, simple, ovate și triunghiulare, cu dimensiuni foarte variate, de la aproximativ 2-30 cm lungime și de 1-15 cm lățime, cu frunze mai mari la baza plantei și frunze mici mai mari pe tulpina de înflorire. Florile sunt inconspicuoase, galben-verde, cu diametrul de 3-4 mm, maturizându-se într-un mic grup de fructe uscate, tare, de fructe, de 5-10 mm, care conține mai multe semințe. Spanacul obișnuit, Spinacia oleracea, a fost mult timp considerat a fi în familia Chenopodiaceae, dar în 2003, familia Chenopodiaceae a fost combinată cu familia Amaranthaceae sub numele de familie "Amaranthaceae" în ordinea Caryophyllales. În familia Amaranthaceae, Amaranthoideae și Chenopodioideae sunt acum subfamilii, pentru amaranți și, respectiv, chenopodi.
