Tolerația este "practica de a permite sau de a permite în mod deliberat un lucru de care unul dezaprobă. Se poate vorbi despre toleranță - de exemplu, de a permite sau a permite - numai dacă cineva este în măsură să respingă". De asemenea, a fost definită ca "a purta sau îndura" sau "a hrăni, susține sau păstra". Toleranța poate însemna "nu mai mult decât toleranța și permisiunea acordată de adepții unei religii dominante pentru alte religii, chiar dacă acestea sunt privite cu dezaprobare ca fiind inferioare, greșite sau dăunătoare". Există un singur verb "de a tolera" și un adjectiv "tolerant", dar cele două substantive "toleranță" și "toleranță" au evoluat înțelesuri puțin diferite.
