Un turneu este o competiție care implică un număr relativ mare de concurenți, toți participând la un sport sau la un joc. Mai exact, termenul poate fi utilizat în oricare dintre cele două simptome suprapuse: ▪ una sau mai multe competiții ținute la un singur loc și concentrate într-un interval de timp relativ scurt. ▪ O competiție care implică mai multe meciuri, fiecare implicând un subset de concurenți, cu câștigătorul turneului general determinat pe baza rezultatelor combinate ale acestor meciuri individuale. Acestea sunt comune în acele sporturi și jocuri în care fiecare meci trebuie să implice un număr mic de concurenți: adesea exact două, la fel ca în majoritatea sporturilor de echipă, sporturile de rachete și sporturile de luptă, multe jocuri de cărți și jocuri de bord și multe forme de dezbateri competitive.
