From Old French vernis, from Medieval Latin veronix sandarac, resin, from Medieval Greek berenikē, perhaps from Greek Berenikē, city in Cyrenaica, Libya where varnishes were used.

Lac
Lacul este un strat transparent, dur, protector sau film utilizat în principal pentru finisarea lemnului, dar și pentru alte materiale. Lacul este în mod tradițional o combinație de ulei de uscare, o rășină și un diluant sau solvent. Finisajele de vopsea sunt, de obicei, lucioase, dar pot fi proiectate pentru a produce plăci de satin sau semi-lucios prin adăugarea de agenți de "flatting". Lacul are puțină sau nici o culoare, este transparent și nu are pigment adăugat, spre deosebire de vopselele sau petele de lemn, care conțin pigment și care, în general, variază de la opac la translucid. Lacurile sunt aplicate și peste petele de lemn ca ultim pas pentru a obține un film pentru luciu și protecție. Unele produse sunt comercializate ca pete combinate și lacuri. După aplicare, substanțele de formare a peliculei în lacuri se întăresc direct, imediat ce solventul sa evaporat complet sau se întăresc după evaporarea solventului prin anumite procese de întărire, în principal reacția chimică dintre uleiuri și oxigen din aer și reacțiile chimice dintre componente ale lacului. Rășinile de la rășină se "usucă" prin evaporarea solventului și se întăresc aproape imediat după uscare.
