Vlach este un termen pătrat care acoperă mai multe popoare latine moderne care coboară din populația latinizată pe teritoriul actual al României și Moldovei, precum și partea sudică a Peninsulei Balcanice și la sud și vest de fluviul Dunărea. Termenul Vlachos provine din cuvântul german de origine celtică Walh, pe care vechii germani îi numea romani și, mai cuprinzător, popoarele care au fost incorporate din punct de vedere administrativ și cultural în lumea romană. Slavii medievali au "împrumutat" cuvântul și astfel s-au transformat din punct de vedere fonetic în Vlah. În această formă sa dezvoltat într-un termen folosit pentru a defini populațiile din sud-estul Europei care vorbesc variații ale limbajului balcanic-român, adică dialectele neo-latine ale regiunii balcanice. Variantele engleze ale numelui includ valahii, Walla, Wlachs, Wallachs, Vlahs, Olahs sau Ulahs. Grupurile care au fost numite în istorie Vlacii includ români moderni, aromani, morlaci, megleno-români și istro-români. De la crearea statului român, termenul în limba engleză a fost folosit în cea mai mare parte pentru cei care trăiesc în afara României.
