Anaplasia

Anaplasia

The term anaplasia is used in medicine to describe the poor differentiation of the cells that make up a tumor. An anaplastic tumor is one whose cells are poorly differentiated or undifferentiated, generally indicating that their behavior is malignant, ie it has the ability to spread locally to neighboring tissues and to spread to other organs. It is considered that the larger and less differentiated a tumor, the more likely it is to produce metastases. Anaplastic tumors show different characteristics in their cells that differentiate them from normal ones and can be determined by microscopic observation in the laboratory: ▪ Pleomorphism. Considerable differences in shape and size between cells. ▪ Large cores. The ratio of the nucleus to the cytoplasm is 1: 1, whereas it normally ranges from 1: 4 to 1: 6. ▪ Cells of strange appearance, with very variable sizes and shapes. ▪ Existence of numerous mitosis. Mitosis is atypical, strange, does not follow normal patterns and is distributed anarchically.
