Mask
A mask is a piece of material, usually opaque or translucent, worn over the face. The material or materials of which may be constituted are gold, turquoise, iron, clay, wax, stone, leather, wicker, animal skin, turtle shell, leaf sheath, braided vine, embroidered or painted fabric, Wool, plastic, plaster, wood, paper, etc. Masks have been used since antiquity for ceremonial and practical purposes. The word "mask" originates from the French masque or maschera in Italian or Spanish masque. Possible ancestors in Latin are mascus, masca = "ghost", and the Arab maskharah = "buffoon", "man with a mask". This is an ornamental simplification. The visible is reduced to the basic elements that transform a face into a mask. And the mask is itself a representation, full of intentions and symbolisms, converted into archetypes that are part of the collective and individual unconscious and represent the fears and aspirations of a civilization.
