Culture

Cultura

Culture is a term that has many interrelated meanings. For example, in 1952, Alfred Kroeber and Clyde Kluckhohn compiled a list of 164 definitions of "culture" in Culture: A Critical Review of Concepts and Definitions. In everyday usage, the word "culture" is used for two different concepts: ▪ Excellence in the taste for fine arts and humanities, also known as high culture. ▪ The sets of knowledge, beliefs and behavior patterns of a social group, including the material means used by its members to communicate with each other and to meet their needs of all kinds. When the concept emerged in Europe between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, it referred to a process of cultivation or improvement, as in agriculture or horticulture. In the nineteenth century, he first referred to the improvement or refinement of the individual, especially through education, and then to the achievement of national aspirations or ideals. In the middle of the nineteenth century, some scientists used the term "culture" to refer to universal human capacity.
