Stasis

In Western medicine, stasis means the state in which the normal flow of a body fluid stops, for example, the flow of blood through the blood vessels or the flow of the intestinal contents through the digestive tract. Similarly, for Chinese medicine, better known in the West through acupuncture, stasis is the retention of vital energy in some specific part of the body, constituting itself a pathology. The term, however, finds application in other branches of knowledge, with the generic sense of numbness, paralysis. In Psychoanalysis it is still applied in "Estase da Libido", a state in which the individual does not discharge his libidinal energy, that is, there is no flow of the libido. For biology, for example, stasis means the periods during evolution, where species remain relatively unchanged.
