arătá (-t, -át), vb.1. A indica, a semnala. – 2. A prezenta, a înfățișa. – 3. A părea, a avea aspectul. – 4. A da de înțeles. – 5. (Refl.) A avea viziuni, a crede cineva că vede ceva (se construiește cu dat.). – 6. A expune, a explica. – 7. A explica, a face lecții, a ajuta la pregătirea temelor școlare. – 8. A corecta, a îndrepta; a învăța minte. – Var. (Trans. de S.) areta. Mr. arăt, istr. arǪtu. Lat. rătāre „a fixa, a determina”. Semantismul se explică în lumina unor expresii ca fr. je suis bien fixé sur son compte, care înseamnă je suis bien renseigné. Și a- poate fi lat. sau rom. Etimonul rătus, în forma *arrătāre, fusese indicat de Candrea, Rom., XXXI, 301, și Éléments, 72 și 91, respins de Pușcariu 108, și abandonat de Candrea, în GS, III, 423, care a sugerat lat. *ad reiterāre, redus la *arretrāre și disimilat; dar problema semantică pare insolubilă. Celelalte explicații sînt insuficiente: lat. *arrectāre, de la rectus (Cihac, I, 82; Weigand, Jb, II, 221-3; DAR); se lovește de dificultăți fonetice; lat. *elatāre (Meyer-Lübke, ZRPh., XIX, 574; REW 2837; Pușcariu, Lat. ti, 10), după Pușcariu 108, „wohl am besten passt, obwohl die Sinnesübergang nich ganz klar ist”. Hasdeu 1557 indica lat. *ad reputare, care nu pare posibil. Pascu, Beiträge, 9, presupune un *erettare, de la erectus, care este fără sens; iar Giuglea, Dacor., IV, 379, pleacă de la gr. ρέυος „membru, aspect”, într-o explicație prea forțată. Der. arătanie, s. f. (monstru, stafie); arătare, s. f. (demonstrație; dovadă, probă; stafie); arătător, adj. (indicator); arătător, s. n. (deget cu care se arată; ac de ceas); arătătură, s. f. (indicație; semnal, semn; monstru, stafie); arătos, adj.; arătoșenie, s. f. (frumusețe).
