A dezvinovăți, a absolvi de vină. – Mr. curare „a curăța”. Lat. curāre (Candrea-Dens., 451; Tiktin, Archiv., CXXXIII, 120; Pascu, I, 73; REW 2412; DAR); cf. ven. curare „a curăța un pui”, fr. curer, cat. escurar. Este dublet al lui cura, vb. (a îngriji un bolnav). Este posibil, cum presupune DAR (cf. Cortés 127), ca termenul rom. să fi ajuns să se confunde cu lat. colare „a strecura, a curăța un lichid”, al cărui rezultat trebuia să fie identic. – Der. curat, s. n. (calitatea de a fi curat; puritate; neprihănire; menstruație; purgativ; cinste, corectitudine; Arg., catastrofă); necurățenie, s. f. (murdărie; excrement); curătură, s. f. (curățare de coajă, pieliță, etc.; teren desțelenit; coji curățate; frunze uscate; pleavă, ciuruială); curățitoare, s. f. (sită, ciur). Curat, mr., megl. curat, istr. curǫt, ar putea fi și reprezentant direct al lat. curatus (Pascu, I, 73; Densusianu, GS, III, 443), sau al lat. colatus (Pușcariu 457; ZRPh., XXVII, 738; REW 2035a). Prima ipoteză este mai probabilă și este suficientă, cf. calabr. curare „a spăla pînza”, comel. kuratu „piele argăsită” (Tagliavini, Arch. Rom., X, 132). Din rom. provine săs. curat(ich) „curat”. Pentru curătură, Candrea-Dens., 452 propune și o der. directă din latină.
