Le crabe du maïs, le corncrake ou le landrail est un oiseau dans la famille du rail. Il se reproduit en Europe et en Asie à l'extrême est de l'ouest de la Chine et migre vers l'Afrique pour l'hiver de l'hémisphère nord. Il s'agit d'un crake de taille moyenne avec des parties supérieures brun-noir et brun foncé, des marques de châtaignier sur les ailes et des parties inférieures bleu-gris avec des barres blanches et rouillées sur les flancs et les sous-côtes. La facture forte est en chair-tonée, l'iris est brun pâle, et les jambes et les pieds sont gris pâle. Le juvénile est semblable en plumage à l'adulte, et les poussins doux sont noirs, comme tous les rails. Il n'y a pas de sous-espèce, bien que les individus de l'est de la zone de reproduction aient tendance à être légèrement plus pâles que leurs homologues occidentaux. L'appel masculin est un krek krek fort, dont le nom scientifique est dérivé. Le crabe de maïs est plus grand que son parent le plus proche, le crake africain, qui partage sa gamme d'hivernage; Cette espèce est également plus plongée, et a un visage plus clair. L'habitat de reproduction du maïs est des prairies, en particulier des champs de foin, et il utilise des milieux similaires sur les terrains d'hivernage.
