Ester
Les esters sont des composés chimiques constitués d'un carbonyle adjacent à une liaison éther. Ils sont dérivés en faisant réagir un oxoacide avec un composé hydroxyle tel qu'un alcool ou un phénol. Les esters sont habituellement dérivés d'un acide inorganique ou d'un acide organique dans lequel au moins un groupe -OH est remplacé par un groupe -O-alkyle et le plus souvent à partir d'acides carboxyliques et d'alcools. C'est-à-dire que les esters sont formés en condensant un acide avec un alcool. Les esters sont omniprésents. La plupart des graisses et huiles naturelles sont les esters d'acides gras du glycérol. Les esters à faible poids moléculaire sont couramment utilisés comme parfums et se retrouvent dans les huiles essentielles et les phéromones. Les phosphoesters forment l'ossature des molécules d'ADN. Les esters de nitrate, tels que la nitroglycérine, sont connus pour leurs propriétés explosives, tandis que les polyesters sont des plastiques importants, avec des monomères liés par des fragments d'ester.
