Noblesse
Gentry sont des «gens bien nés, gentils et bien élevés» de classe sociale élevée, surtout dans le passé. Gentry, dans sa plus large connotation, se réfère à des personnes de bonne position sociale liées aux terres aménagées, aux niveaux supérieurs du clergé et aux familles «douces» de longue décennie qui n'ont jamais obtenu le droit officiel de porter un blason. En Angleterre, le terme se réfère souvent à la classe sociale de l'aristocratie terrienne ou à l'aristocratie mineure dont les revenus proviennent de leurs grandes propriétés foncières. L'idée de gentry dans le sens continental de "noblesse" est éteinte dans le langage commun en Angleterre, malgré les efforts des amateurs pour la relancer. Bien que la noblesse sans titre en Angleterre soit généralement appelée gentry, le sens ancien de la «noblesse» est celui d'une qualité identique à la noblesse. La division sociale fondamentale dans la majeure partie de l'Europe au Moyen Age était entre les «nobiles», c'est-à-dire les locataires de la chevalerie et les «ignobiles», c'est-à-dire les vilains, les citoyens et les bourgeois. La division en nobles et ignobles dans les petites régions d'Europe au Moyen Age était moins exacte en raison d'un ordre féodal plus rudimentaire.
