Giaour
Giaour ou Gawur ou Ghiaour, écrit gâvur dans le turc moderne, est une injure religieuse et parfois ethnique utilisée par les musulmans en Turquie et dans les Balkans pour décrire tous ceux qui ne sont pas musulmans, en particulier les populations chrétiennes proches comme les Grecs, les Arméniens, les Bulgares , Les Serbes, les Macédoniens, les Roumains et les Assyriens. Le terme est considéré comme hautement offensant par les chrétiens dans les Balkans. L'Encyclopædia Britannica de 1911 a décrit le terme comme suit: Giaour, un mot utilisé par les Turcs pour décrire tous ceux qui ne sont pas musulmans, avec une référence particulière aux chrétiens. La parole, employée pour la première fois comme un terme de mépris et de reproche, est devenue si générale que, dans la plupart des cas, aucune insulte n'est destinée à l'utiliser; De même, dans certaines parties de la Chine, le terme «diable étranger» est devenu vide d'infraction. Une analogie stricte à la giaour se trouve dans le kafir arabe, ou incrédule, qui est si communément utilisé pour devenir le nom propre des peuples et des pays.
