L'étiquetage ou l'étiquetage décrivent quelqu'un ou quelque chose en un mot ou une phrase courte. Par exemple, décrivant quelqu'un qui a violé une loi en tant que criminel. La théorie de l'étiquetage est une théorie en sociologie qui attribue l'étiquetage des personnes au contrôle et à l'identification du comportement déviant. On a soutenu que l'étiquetage est nécessaire à la communication. Cependant, l'utilisation du terme étiquetage vise souvent à souligner le fait que l'étiquette est une description appliquée de l'extérieur plutôt que quelque chose qui est intrinsèque à la chose étiquetée. Cela peut se faire pour plusieurs raisons: ▪ Pour provoquer une discussion sur la meilleure description ▪ Rejeter une étiquette particulière ▪ Rejeter toute l'idée que la chose étiquetée peut être décrite dans une phrase courte. Ce dernier usage peut être considéré comme une accusation selon laquelle une telle description est trop réductrice. Donner quelque chose qu'une étiquette peut être considérée comme positive, mais le terme label n'est généralement pas utilisé dans ce cas. Par exemple, donner un nom à une identité commune est considéré comme essentiel dans la politique d'identité.

Labelling or labeling is describing someone or something in a word or short phrase. For example, describing someone who has broken a law as a criminal. Labelling theory is a theory in sociology which ascribes labelling of people to control and identification of deviant behavior. It has been argued that labelling is necessary for communication. However, the use of the term labelling is often intended to highlight the fact that the label is a description applied from the outside, rather than something intrinsic to the labelled thing. This can be done for several reasons: ▪ To provoke a discussion about what the best description is ▪ To reject a particular label ▪ To reject the whole idea that the labelled thing can be described in a short phrase. This last usage can be seen as an accusation that such a short description is overly-reductive. Giving something a label can be seen as positive, but the term label is not usually used in this case. For example, giving a name to a common identity is seen as essential in identity politics.
