En biologie évolutive, le mimétisme est une similitude d'une espèce à l'autre qui protège l'une ou l'autre. Cette similitude peut être en apparence, comportement, son, parfum ou emplacement. Les éléments mimiques se trouvent dans les mêmes domaines que leurs modèles. La mimétisme se produit lorsqu'un groupe d'organismes, les mimiques, évolue pour partager les caractéristiques communes perçues avec un autre groupe, les modèles. L'évolution est guidée par l'action sélective d'un signal-récepteur ou d'un dupe. Les oiseaux, par exemple, utilisent la vue pour identifier les insectes apaisants, tout en évitant les modèles nocifs. Le modèle est habituellement une autre espèce, sauf dans les cas d'automimicry. Le signal-récepteur est généralement un autre organisme intermédiaire comme le prédateur commun de deux espèces, mais peut en fait être le modèle lui-même, comme une mite ressemblant à son prédateur d'araignées. En tant qu'interaction, le mimétisme est dans la plupart des cas avantageux pour le mimique et le nocif pour le récepteur, mais peut augmenter, réduire ou ne pas avoir d'effet sur la forme physique du modèle en fonction de la situation.

In evolutionary biology, mimicry is a similarity of one species to another which protects one or both. This similarity can be in appearance, behaviour, sound, scent or location. Mimics are found in the same areas as their models. Mimicry occurs when a group of organisms, the mimics, evolve to share common perceived characteristics with another group, the models. The evolution is driven by the selective action of a signal-receiver or dupe. Birds, for example, use sight to identify palatable insects, whilst avoiding the noxious models. The model is usually another species except in cases of automimicry. The signal-receiver is typically another intermediate organism like the common predator of two species, but may actually be the model itself, such as a moth resembling its spider predator. As an interaction, mimicry is in most cases advantageous to the mimic and harmful to the receiver, but may increase, reduce or have no effect on the fitness of the model depending on the situation.
