1. A opri, a se împotrivi.
2. A ocroti, a păzi, a pune la adăpost. –
3. A feri, a ocoli, a eschiva. –
Mr. apăr, istr. opăr. Lat. appărāre (Pușcariu 93; Candrea-Dens., 63; REW 534; DAR);
cf. it. appararse, prov. apará, sp. aparar. Toate celelalte formațiuni romanice par
neol. Evoluția semantică de la „a prepara”, sens propriu al cuvîntului
lat., la „a opri” pare a fi anterioară
rom.,
cf. sp. parar. De aici, trecerea la „a ocroti, a păzi” este firească, deoarece „a ocroti” ceva înseamnă „a opri” dușmanul;
cf. sp. amparar și
fr. défendre „a opri” și „a interzice”. Același sens în
it. riparare „a opri”.
