No caso dos derivados do tempo, o subjacente é, por outro lado, a temperatura diária, precipitação ou similar. Os produtos financeiros mais vendidos na Alemanha usam o dólar norte-americano, os títulos do governo ou o DAX como o subjacente.

Underlying bezeichnet man den Vertragsgegenstand eines Termin-, Terminkontrakt- oder Optionsgeschäfts oder eines anderen Derivats, der für die Erfüllung und Bewertung des Vertrags als Grundlage dient. Waren und Finanzwerte aller Art können Basiswerte für Derivatgeschäfte sein. Die Palette reicht bei Waren von Schweinebäuchen über Schlachtvieh, Zucker, Wolle, Bauholz, Rohöl, Kupfer bis hin zu Gold und Platin. Bei Finanztermingeschäften umfassen sie vor allem Devisen, Schuldverschreibungen wie Staatsanleihen und Termingeld sowie Aktien- und anderen Indizes. Bei Wetterderivaten ist der Basiswert dagegen die Tagestemperatur, Niederschlagsmenge oder Ähnliches. Die umsatzstärksten Finanzprodukte in Deutschland verwenden als Basiswert den US-Dollar, Bundesanleihen oder den DAX.
