Cacique é um título derivado do Taíno para os chefes pré-colombianos ou líderes das tribos nas Bahamas, nas Grandes Antilhas e nas Antilhas Menores do norte. Após os encontros com os Taíno após sua chegada ao Novo Mundo, os espanhóis usaram a palavra como título para os líderes das outras tribos indígenas que encontraram nos territórios do hemisfério ocidental que ocuparam. Em língua espanhola, o termo passou a significar um chefe político local que exerce poder significativo. O termo também é usado na língua portuguesa para descrever os líderes das comunidades indígenas no Brasil. Também é freqüentemente usado em Portugal para descrever como certos estudantes influentes e bem conhecidos usam seu poderoso caráter social para influenciar as eleições do corpo estudantil no movimento estudantil nas principais universidades de Portugal. Na Espanha e no Brasil, a palavra é mais usada no terceiro sentido, que significa "uma pessoa em uma aldeia ou região que exerce influência excessiva em questões políticas".
