Ambivalența este o stare de reacții simultane, conflictuale față de un obiect. Declarată într-un alt mod, ambivalența este experiența de a avea o atitudine față de cineva sau ceva care conține atât componente pozitive, cât și negative valențioase. Termenul se referă, de asemenea, la situații în care s-au simțit "sentimente mixte" de o natură mai generală sau în care o persoană se confruntă cu incertitudine sau indecizie cu privire la ceva. Expresia "stând pe gard" este adesea folosită pentru a descrie sentimentul de ambivalență.
