În economie și finanțe, arbitrajul este practica de a profita de diferența de preț între două sau mai multe piețe: obținerea unei combinații de oferte de potrivire care valorifică dezechilibrul, profitul fiind diferența dintre prețurile pieței. Atunci când este utilizat de cadre universitare, un arbitraj este o tranzacție care nu implică fluxuri de trezorerie negative în nici o stare probabilistică sau temporală și un flux de numerar pozitiv în cel puțin un stat; în termeni simpli, este vorba de posibilitatea unui profit fără riscuri după costurile tranzacției. De exemplu, un arbitraj este prezent atunci când există posibilitatea de a cumpăra instantaneu scăzut și de a vinde la un nivel ridicat. În principiu și în scopuri academice, un arbitraj nu prezintă riscuri; în uz comun, ca și în arbitrajul statistic, se poate referi la profitul așteptat, deși pot apărea pierderi, iar în practică există întotdeauna riscuri în arbitraj, unele minore, unele majore. În utilizarea academică, un arbitraj presupune profitarea de diferențele de preț ale unui singur activ sau ale fluxurilor de numerar identice; în uz comun, este folosit și pentru a face trimitere la diferențele dintre activele similare, ca și în cazul arbitrajului de fuziune.
