Banană
O banană este un fruct comestibil produs de mai multe tipuri de plante mari de flori erbacee din genul Musa. Fructele sunt variabile în dimensiune, culoare și fermitate, dar sunt de obicei alungite și curbate, cu carne moale bogată în amidon acoperit cu o crustă care poate fi verde, galben, roșu, violet sau maro atunci când este coaptă. Fructele cresc în grupuri agățate de partea superioară a plantei. Aproape toate bananele moderne comestibile parthenocarpice provin din două specii sălbatice - Musa acuminata și Musa balbisiana. Denumirile științifice ale majorității bananelor cultivate sunt Musa acuminata, Musa balbisiana și Musa × paradisiaca pentru hibridul Musa acuminata × M. balbisiana, în funcție de constituția lor genomică. Vechiul nume științific Musa sapientum nu mai este folosit. Speciile Musa sunt originare din Indomalaya tropicală și din Australia și probabil că au fost inițial domesticite în Papua Noua Guinee. Acestea sunt cultivate în cel puțin 107 țări, în principal pentru fructele lor și într-o mai mică măsură pentru a face fibre, vin de banane și bere de banane și ca plante ornamentale.
