Borax
Borax, cunoscut și sub numele de borat de sodiu, tetraborat de sodiu sau tetraborat de disodiu, este un compus important de bor, un mineral și o sare a acidului boric. Boraxul pulbere este alb, constând din cristale moi incolore care se dizolvă ușor în apă. Borax are o mare varietate de utilizări. Este o componentă a multor detergenți, cosmetice și glazuri de smalț. Este, de asemenea, utilizat pentru a face soluții tampon în biochimie, ca un agent ignifug, ca un compus anti-fungice pentru fibră de sticlă, ca un flux în metalurgie, scuturi de captură de neutroni pentru surse radioactive, un agent de textură în gătit și ca precursor pentru alți compuși de bor. În mineritul de aur artizanal, metoda borax este uneori utilizată ca înlocuitor al mercurului toxic în procesul de extracție a aurului. Borax a fost folosit de minerii de aur în unele părți ale Filipinelor în anii 1900.
