Celibat
Celibatul este în mod voluntar necăsătorit, abstinent sexual sau ambele, de obicei din motive religioase. Este deseori asociat cu rolul unui oficial religios sau al unui devotat. În sensul său îngust, termenul celibitate se aplică numai acelora pentru care statul necăsătorit este rezultatul unui jurământ sacru, al renunțării sau al convingerii religioase. Într-un sens mai larg, se înțelege în mod obișnuit abstinența numai din activitatea sexuală. Celibatul a existat într-o formă sau alta pe parcursul istoriei, în aproape toate religiile majore ale lumii, iar viziunile asupra acesteia au variat. Vechiul iudaism era puternic opus celibatului. În mod similar, romanii au considerat-o drept o aberație și au impus sancțiuni fiscale împotriva acesteia, cu singura excepție acordată Virgilor din Vestal. Creștinii din Evul Mediu și, în special, de catolicii credeau că celibatul era o condiție prealabilă pentru slujba religioasă. Protestantismul a văzut o răsturnare a acestei tendințe în Occident, iar Biserica Ortodoxă Răsăriteană nu a adoptat-o niciodată. Atitudinile islamice față de celibat au fost și ele complexe; Muhammad a denunțat-o, dar niște ordine Sufi îl îmbrățișează.
