Cazul dativ este un caz gramatic care, în general, este folosit pentru a indica substantivul căruia îi este dat ceva, ca în "George ia dat lui Jamie o băutură". În general, dativul marchează obiectul indirect al unui verb, deși în unele cazuri dativul este folosit pentru obiectul direct al unui verb care se referă direct la un act de a da ceva. Lucrul dat poate fi un obiect tangibil, cum ar fi "o carte" sau "o tapiserie", sau poate fi o abstractizare intangibilă, cum ar fi "un răspuns" sau "ajutor". În unele limbi, cazul dativ a asimilat funcțiile altor cazuri acum dispărute. În greaca veche, dativul are funcțiile de locativ și instrumental Proto-indo-european, precum și cele ale dativei originale. Uneori dativul are funcții care nu au legătură cu darea. În galeza scoțiană și în limba irlandeză, termenul de caz dativ este folosit în mod greșit în gramaticile tradiționale pentru a se referi la marcarea cazului prepositional a substantivelor în urma propozițiilor simple și a articolului definit. În cazul georgian, cazul dativ marchează, de asemenea, subiectul sentinței în anumite verbe și în unele timpuri. Aceasta se numește construcția dativă.
