Decadența înseamnă de obicei o descompunere percepută în standarde, morale, demnitate, credință religioasă sau conducere printre membrii elitei unei mari structuri sociale. Prin extensie, ar putea însemna o scădere a artei sau a literaturii, sau un comportament auto-indulgent. În literatura de specialitate, mișcarea decadentă - scriitorii fin de siècle din secolul al XIX-lea, care au fost asociate cu simbolismul sau cu mișcarea estetică - i-au fost date mai întâi numele criticilor ostili.
