Gentry sunt "oameni bine-născuți, buni și bine crescuți" de înaltă clasă socială, mai ales în trecut. Gentry, în cea mai largă conotație, se referă la oameni cu o bună poziție socială legată de proprietăți imobiliare, niveluri superioare ale clerului și familii "blânde" de coborâre lungă care nu au obținut niciodată dreptul oficial de a purta o stemă. În Anglia, termenul se referă adesea la clasa socială a aristocrației debarcate sau la aristocrația minoră a cărei venituri derivă din proprietățile lor mari. Ideea de gentrie în sensul continental al "noblesse" este dispărută în limbajul comun în Anglia, în ciuda eforturilor entuziasmului de ao reînvia. Deși nobilimea fără titlu din Anglia este în mod obișnuit numită "gentry", simțul mai vechi al "nobilimii" este cel de o calitate identică cu cea a gentriței.
