Informația este cea care informează, adică de la care pot fi obținute datele. Informațiile sunt transmise fie sub forma unui mesaj, fie prin observația directă sau indirectă a unui lucru. Ceea ce este perceput poate fi interpretat ca un mesaj în sine și, în acest sens, informația este întotdeauna transmisă drept conținutul unui mesaj. Informațiile pot fi codificate în diverse forme pentru transmitere și interpretare. De exemplu, informațiile pot fi codificate în semne și transmise prin semnale. În termodinamică, informația este orice fel de eveniment care afectează starea unui sistem dinamic care poate interpreta informațiile. Informațiile rezolvă incertitudinea. Incertitudinea unui eveniment este măsurată prin probabilitatea apariției acestuia și este invers proporțională cu aceasta. Cu cât este mai incert un eveniment, cu atât mai multe informații sunt necesare pentru a rezolva incertitudinea acelui eveniment. Bitul este o unitate tipică de informații, dar pot fi utilizate și alte unități, cum ar fi nat. Exemplu: informații într-o singură coin fl ip: log2 = 1 bit, iar în două flipsuri corecte este log2 = 2 biți. Conceptul că informația este mesajul are semnificații diferite în diferite contexte.
