Jackdaw-ul occidental, cunoscut și sub numele de jackdaw eurasiatic, jackdaw european sau pur și simplu jackdaw, este o pasăre paserică în familia cioară. S-a găsit în Europa, Asia de Vest și Africa de Nord, este în cea mai mare parte rezidentă, deși populațiile din nordul și estul Europei migrează spre sud în timpul iernii. Patru subspecii sunt recunoscute, care diferă în principal prin colorarea penajului pe cap și pe ceafă. Linnaeus la descris pentru prima dată în mod oficial, dându-i numele de Corvus monedula. Analiza ulterioară a ADN-ului său sugerează că, cu cea mai apropiată relativă a lui Daurian Jackdaw, este o deviere de la genul Corvus, și poate suficient de distinctă pentru a justifica reclasificarea într-un gen separat, Coloeus. Denumirea comună derivă din cuvântul "jack", adică "mic" și "daw", numele nativ englezesc pentru pasăre. Cu o lungime de 34-39 de centimetri, cocoșul de Vest este o pasăre îngroșată cu negru, cu o nuanță gri și distinctă irisuri palide-gri. Este gregară și vocală, trăind în grupuri mici, cu o structură socială complexă pe terenurile agricole, pe păduri deschise, pe stânci de coastă și în mediul urban.
